Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-26 Green Thumb – glossy brush-on ceramic glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-26 Green Thumb is a brush-on ceramic glaze for painting wet clay and bisque-fired earthenware or stoneware. It fires glossy and needs no additional clear glaze. It can be fired in an oxidising or reducing atmosphere. It comes in a 236 ml bottle.
The colours in the Stroke & Coat series can be mixed with each other and thinned with water or medium. This lets you create your own shades, washes or soft gradients. The glaze is suitable for hobby use, courses and studios.
Applying the glaze
The glaze stays where you put it. This helps with fine lines, details and multicoloured designs. Stir it well before use.
- 1 coat gives a translucent result
- 2–3 coats give full coverage, according to Mayco
- Let each coat dry before applying the next
- Thinned with water or medium, it produces washes and soft gradients
Firing and cone 6
According to Mayco, the series fires from cone 06 to cone 10, in an oxidising or reducing atmosphere. The glazes are formulated for cone 06/05. If you want to fire higher, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colours behave differently: some become more transparent or lighter. Mayco therefore recommends testing first on a test piece made from your own clay.
For tableware
According to Mayco, the surface is considered dinnerware safe after correct firing. Make sure you fire the glaze exactly as the manufacturer specifies and do not mix it with glazes that are not intended for this purpose.
