Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-39 Army Surplus – opaque brush-on glaze with a glossy finish
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-39 Army Surplus is a ceramic glaze in a 236 ml container, applied with a brush. You can apply it to wet clay, bisque-fired earthenware and bisque-fired stoneware. According to Mayco, the glaze is highly pigmented and thick. It is therefore suitable for brush strokes, fine lines and multicoloured designs, as well as for full, opaque coverage.
The glaze fires glossy and does not need a clear glaze over it. According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is dinnerware safe. According to the ACMI, the AP (Approved Product) seal indicates a product with no hazard labelling.
Applying Stroke & Coat
The glaze can be applied with a brush in strokes or over whole areas. It stays where you put it and hardly runs. This makes details and multicoloured motifs easier.
- Stir the glaze thoroughly before use.
- Dust the bisque ware beforehand, for example with a slightly damp sponge.
- One coat is translucent; for full opacity, apply 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry first.
- Keep the foot free of glaze or wipe it clean so the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf.
Mixing and thinning
All colours in the range can be mixed with one another, so you can create your own shades. Thinned with water, they give transparent watercolour-style effects. Because opacity depends on the number of coats, it is best to test your mixture and dilution on a test piece made from your own clay.
Firing and high firing
Stroke & Coat is formulated for cone 06/05, the usual glaze firing for earthenware. According to Mayco, the glaze can be fired from cone 06 to cone 10, in oxidation or reduction. In high firing many colours hold their shade, especially red, orange, yellow, green and blue. However, with some colours in the range the colour or transparency changes. You should therefore check how Army Surplus behaves at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) on a test piece in your own kiln.
