The FORTE BASIC series 394 flat brush from da Vinci is a synthetic brush for applying paint over larger areas, for example acrylic paint on wood, card or ceramics. The springy synthetic fibres sit in a seamless aluminium ferrule and keep their shape as you paint. The brush is designed as a student and hobby brush and is suitable for school, hobby use and smaller art projects.

The short handle has a matt blue finish and a grippy surface texture. The lacquer is water-based, and the handle is slightly flattened at its thickest point so that the brush does not roll off the table. Choose your size from the options.

What the flat brush is suitable for

The flat shape covers areas evenly, and the fibres are strong enough for rough painting surfaces such as wood, card, bisque porcelain and ceramics. You can work with acrylic paint, gouache-type body colour and fabric paint. Thick, heavy-bodied paints and texture pastes can also be applied with it. Use the broad side to paint areas and the narrow edge for straight lines and clean edges.

Choosing a size and caring for the brush

The series comes in sizes 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16. The small sizes are good for narrow areas and borders. The large sizes cover bigger areas in fewer strokes. For background and detail work you will therefore usually need two sizes. After painting with acrylic paint, rinse the brush out with water straight away, before the paint dries in the ferrule. Leave it to dry lying flat so that no water runs into the ferrule.
