ABIG Lino Cutting Tool Set – Wooden Handle, Cutters and Box for Lino Printing
The ABIG lino cutting tool set is an 8-piece set for cutting lino printing plates for relief print designs at school, as a hobby and in graphic art studies. It contains a wooden handle with a sturdy metal insert, a V-gouge, a decorative gouge, a pre-cutting knife and two U-gouges (3 mm and 4 mm). All the pieces are stored in a plastic box with a lid, so they stay neatly together.
The set is intended for lino cutting, woodcut, Softcut and other printing techniques. With the different blades you can cut fine lines, broad areas and outlines without having to buy extra tools.
Which blade for what?
The blades differ in profile and width. This is how you find the right one for your design:
- Pre-cutting knife: for outlines and detail work, for example to cut cleanly around the edge of a design first
- V-gouge: V-shaped blade for lines and outlines
- Decorative gouge: for fine decorations and lines
- U-gouges 3 mm and 4 mm: U-shaped blades for removing areas; the wider one takes away more material
Working step by step
Transfer your design to the plate as a mirror image, otherwise it will appear reversed in the print. First cut in the outlines with the pre-cutting knife or V-gouge, then remove the areas that are to stay white with the U-gouges. The areas left standing will print the colour later, while the removed areas stay paper-white. Make a test print before the final print and correct any ridges that are still standing.
The blades are sharp. Always cut away from your body, keep your free hand behind the blade and secure the plate on a non-slip surface. After working, put the blades back into the box so the cutting edges stay protected.
