Schmincke Liquid Earth – three earth tones for painting and underdrawing

The Schmincke Liquid Earth set contains three aluminium tubes of 5 ml each: 850 Chalk, 852 Umber and 854 Red Chalk. You use them with a brush to paint and draw on paper, card and canvas. The colours are based on natural earth pigments mined regionally in Germany. Gum arabic is used as the binder, and according to Schmincke the colours are vegan.

The consistency is gouache-like. Undiluted, the paint is more opaque; diluted with water, it gives different shades, textures and layer thicknesses. The colours are semi-opaque and, according to Schmincke, are rated in the highest lightfastness category. You can also combine them with charcoal, chalk, red chalk and umber pencils.

Smudging and surface

According to Schmincke, depending on the surface and layer thickness, the colours can still be smudged by hand and are easily removed with water. The smoother and firmer the surface, the more easily the paint can be altered. This is useful for corrections and soft transitions. Bear it in mind, though, if you touch a finished drawing with your hand or it comes into contact with water.

Which shade for what?

The three shades complement each other in a drawing. For larger areas and underdrawings, apply the paint with a brush. If you dilute it heavily, it is also suitable as a thin underpainting, for example for oil painting.
