Schmincke Liquid Earth 854 Red Chalk – vegan earth paint for painting and preliminary drawing
Schmincke Liquid Earth 854 Red Chalk is a vegan, liquid paint made from natural earth pigments for painting, preliminary drawing and underpainting with a brush. It complements the range of liquid charcoals and is a liquid alternative to a red chalk pencil or Carré stick. It is bound with gum arabic, has a gouache-like consistency and can be diluted with water.
The red chalk is semi-opaque and, according to the manufacturer, has the highest lightfastness. You can use the 15 ml tube neat for strong lines and areas, or diluted for more transparent, glazing applications, including over large areas.
Working with Liquid Earth
Put a small amount on a palette. Neat from the tube, the paint goes on strongly and more opaque; with a little water it becomes transparent and suits preliminary drawings and larger areas. For a thin underpainting, for example beneath oil paint, dilute it further. It is suitable for paper, card and canvas.
Smudge resistance and combinations
The paint stays water-soluble. How much it can still be altered after drying depends on the surface and the thickness of the layer: the smoother and firmer the surface, the more easily the paint can be lifted again. It is therefore worth testing on an offcut of your paper or canvas first. Liquid Earth can be combined with all liquid earths and charcoals, as well as with drawing charcoal and with chalk, red chalk and umber pencils.
Which shade to choose
Liquid Earth comes in three shades: 850 Chalk, 852 Umber and 854 Red Chalk. Red Chalk is the warm, reddish-brown tone you know from classic red chalk drawings, for example for sketches, figure studies and portraits.
