Schmincke Liquid Earth 850 Chalk – white, vegan paint for underdrawing and painting

Schmincke Liquid Earth 850 Chalk is a white, liquid paint based on natural earth pigments. You can use it to draw and paint directly with a brush on light, coloured and dark grounds. The pigments are mined in Germany, and the paint is vegan and bound with gum arabic.

The consistency is similar to gouache: the paint is semi-opaque, remains water-soluble and can be used neat or diluted. It is a liquid alternative or complement to chalk pencils or Carré sticks and can be combined with charcoal.

Working with Liquid Earth

You can use the paint neat from the tube or dilute it with water. Neat, it covers more strongly; diluted, the application becomes more translucent. It is suitable for paper, card and canvas. It is particularly useful for underdrawing and underpainting on dark or coloured grounds, because the pale white stays visible there. Once dry, the paint is smudge-proof. How easily it can be re-wetted with water depends on the ground and the thickness of the layer: the smoother and firmer the painting surface, the more easily it can be altered. We therefore recommend a test on your own painting surface first. Wash your brushes out with water after painting.

Chalk, Umber or Red Chalk?

Liquid Earth comes in three shades: Chalk, Umber and Red Chalk. Chalk is the pale white for highlights and accents on a dark or coloured ground. Umber and Red Chalk are the earthy tones for underdrawing and modelling. All shades can be combined with the other Liquid Earths and with Schmincke Liquid Charcoal.
