Clover 6 mm Bias Tape Maker – make your own iron-on bias binding
The Clover 6 mm (1/4") bias tape maker (art. no. 4011) turns a strip of fabric cut on the bias into narrow bias binding that you can iron on using fusible web. This lets you make bias binding from fabric scraps or favourite fabrics, in exactly the colour and pattern that suit your project.
The maker belongs to the Clover Fusible Bias Tape Maker series. The fusible web runs through the upper channel and the fabric through the lower one. Both are pulled through together and pressed. For this size, Clover specifies 5 mm wide fusible web as suitable.
Making iron-on bias binding
Cut the fabric into strips on the bias, at an angle to the grain. Fabric cut on the bias gives in curves, so the finished binding can later be laid around rounded shapes too. Then proceed as follows:
- Thread the fusible web into the upper channel of the maker and the fabric strip into the lower channel.
- Pull both materials through the maker at the same time and press them straight away just behind the exit opening.
- Peel off the backing paper of the fusible web, lay the binding in the desired place and iron it on.
- It also works without fusible web: in that case you simply press the binding folded.
Uses and choosing a size
With a nominal width of 6 mm, this is the narrowest maker in the series. For the small sizes, Clover mentions uses such as Celtic and stained-glass quilts, network patterns and temporary piping, as well as appliqué. The series also includes 9, 12, 18 and 25 mm (art. nos. 4012 to 4015). 5 mm fusible web suits 6 and 9 mm, while 10 mm wide web suits 12, 18 and 25 mm. When buying fusible web, check that you choose the right width, otherwise it will not run through the maker properly.
