Lang Yarns Fersenwolle – darning yarn for reinforcing and mending

Fersenwolle from Lang Yarns is a darning and carry-along yarn made from 75 % virgin wool and 25 % polyamide. You use it to reinforce the heels and toes of hand-knitted socks and to mend holes in knitwear. The polyamide content makes the yarn more hard-wearing, while the virgin wool feels pleasant against the skin. Choose your colour from the options.

The yarn comes as a small 5 g reel. That is enough for targeted repairs and for carrying along in areas that see heavy wear, but not for a whole knitted piece.

Reinforcing heels and toes

As a carry-along yarn, you knit Fersenwolle together with your sock yarn. Start just before the heel or toe and work both strands as one. The fabric becomes denser and stands up better to rubbing inside the shoe. Choose a needle size to suit the main yarn, as the carry-along strand makes the fabric slightly firmer.

Darning a hole

Stretch the area over a darning mushroom. Using the darning needle, lay strands vertically across the hole, then work horizontally, alternately over and under these strands. Leave a little space at the edges beyond the rim of the hole so that the darning is anchored in the intact knitting.
