Botz Stoneware Glaze 9870 Transparent – colourless and glossy clear glaze for stoneware

Botz stoneware glaze 9870 Transparent is a liquid, colourless, clear glaze for stoneware with a firing range of 1220–1280 °C. You apply it with a brush. After firing the surface is glossy, and the colour of your clay or any decoration underneath stays visible.

Within the firing range of 1220–1280 °C the stoneware becomes vitrified and frost-proof, so it no longer absorbs water. This makes the glaze suitable for pieces you also want to place outdoors, such as plant pots or garden ceramics.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before applying. Brush on 2 to 3 coats and let each coat dry thoroughly. Over UNIDEKOR, apply it only once.

• At 1220 °C the surface tends to be satin-gloss, at 1250 °C it is glossy

When to use the clear glaze

Choose the clear glaze when the colour of the clay, an engobe or a decoration should stay visible. The coloured glazes in the Botz stoneware series, by contrast, colour the surface themselves. The result therefore depends strongly on the base: on light clay it looks clearer, while on dark clay the clay colour shows through. Apply it evenly, as the glaze can run more during firing where it is applied more thickly. Leave the foot of the piece free and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. A test piece made from your clay will show you beforehand how gloss and colour turn out in your firing.
