Mayco Stoneware SW-203 Root Beer – deep brown stoneware glaze with golden highlights
Mayco Stoneware SW-203 Root Beer is a stoneware glaze in a rich dark brown with golden highlights, for stoneware, porcelain and clay. Depending on the application and firing temperature, the surface shows slightly shimmering, organic variations and looks glossy to satin-matt. The warm, earthy tone emphasises reliefs, textures and edges and suits rustic, natural-looking vessels and bowls.
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. It belongs to the Mayco Stoneware series, which is designed for the higher firing temperatures of the stoneware range. The jar contains 473 ml.
How to apply the glaze
Stir the glaze thoroughly before use, as the pigments settle at the bottom. Apply 2–3 even coats with a brush to a clean, dust-free piece and let each coat dry before applying the next. The glaze must not be sprayed. Depending on the thickness of the coats and the colour of the clay, you get deep, slightly metallic shimmering browns: a thin application lets the clay body show through more, while several coats look darker and richer.
Firing and result
The firing range is 1180–1280 °C. Depending on the application and temperature, the surface can turn out anywhere from glossy to satin-matt. A test tile made from your clay shows you in advance how colour and gloss look with your kiln and firing schedule. Keep the foot of the piece free of glaze or wipe it clean so that nothing sticks to the kiln shelf.
