Mayco Underglaze Sea Blue UG-002 – soft blue for ceramic painting
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-002 Sea Blue is an underglaze in a soft, clear blue, which you use to paint ceramics before they are glazed. Apply it with a brush to wet clay, a blank or bisque-fired ware (cone 04, approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart), for areas, lines and details.
At cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Sea Blue fires matt according to Mayco, even without clear glaze. Under a clear glaze or matt clear glaze the colour becomes stronger. At higher firing temperatures the colour becomes more concentrated: at cone 6 oxidising (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) it stays blue and becomes cooler in tone.
Using Sea Blue
Mayco recommends shaking the underglaze before use and applying it in 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next. If applied too thinly, the colour looks pale. The colours in the range can be mixed with each other and used for lines, dots or areas.
- Apply to wet clay, a blank or cone 04 bisque-fired ware
- On clay or a blank, fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart) after drying
- Firing range: cone 06 to cone 10
- A test tile on your own clay and in your own kiln shows you the colour effect beforehand
Dinnerware only with clear glaze
For dinnerware, such as hand-painted cups or plates, apply a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze over Sea Blue (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without this clear glaze, the piece is not intended for use as dinnerware. For stoneware, Mayco names SW-001 Stoneware Clear as the recommended clear glaze.
