Mayco Underglaze UG-087 Regal Purple – deep purple underglaze for ceramic decoration
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-087 Regal Purple is a deep purple underglaze for decorating ceramics, for example for lines, floral motifs, graphic patterns or solid areas of colour. You apply it with a brush or sponge to wet clay, greenware or bisque-fired ware.
Regal Purple belongs to the Fundamentals Underglaze series, Mayco's first product line designed for consistent colour and even application. According to Mayco, the Fundamentals colours are fired in the same range and processed in the same way.
Applying Regal Purple
According to Mayco, you apply the colours in this series in 2–3 coats. This gives the purple the intensity you want. Let each coat dry before applying the next, otherwise the layer underneath will smear.
- Stir the glaze well before use
- Surface: wet clay, greenware or ware bisque-fired to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Apply 2–3 coats with a brush or sponge
- Use a brush for fine lines and motifs; a sponge is often enough for larger areas
Firing and finish
The firing range of the series runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Mayco shows the colours fired at cone 06 and cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising atmosphere and at cone 10 in a reduction atmosphere. According to Mayco, colour concentration occurs at cone 6 and cone 10, so the colour looks different there than at cone 06. Fire a test tile in your own firing range first. Without clear glaze the underglaze fires matt; with clear glaze the finish is glossy. For cones 6 and 10, Mayco names SW-001 Stoneware Clear as the clear glaze.
Decorating tableware
If you want to decorate tableware, you need a transparent, tableware-safe clear glaze over the decoration. Regal Purple is only suitable for tableware in this combination. Unglazed areas with underglaze are not.
