Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-031 Chocolate – warm brown for designs and solid areas
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-031 Chocolate is an underglaze in a warm, earthy brown. You can use it for patterns, shading, nature motifs and opaque areas on ceramics. Apply it to wet clay, greenware or bisque fired to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
For patterns or full coverage, apply 2–3 coats. Unglazed, the underglaze fires to a soft matt; under a clear glaze the surface becomes glossy. Chocolate belongs to the Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze series, which is available in many other colours.
Applying and firing Chocolate
Stir the colour well before use and paint on 2–3 coats until the area is as opaque as you want it. Let each coat dry before applying the next. For fine lines, a single coat is often not enough if you want them to look a strong brown. After that you have two options:
- On clay or greenware: fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart), then apply a transparent glaze and glaze fire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart). According to Mayco, the colour becomes lighter as a result.
- On bisque: let dry, apply clear glaze and fire to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
- Clear glaze firing: cone 06–05 for earthenware, higher up to cone 10 for stoneware.
Colour at higher temperatures
At cone 06, Chocolate fires to a matt finish. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the brown becomes lighter and gains a soft sheen. At cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart, reduction), it loses some of its warmth, again with a soft sheen. If the shade matters to you, fire a test piece at your own temperature first.
For dinnerware
Mayco only rates Chocolate as dinnerware safe under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, this does not apply. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: exempt from hazard labelling.
