The da Vinci MAESTRO round brush 1184 is an artist's brush made of Kolinsky red sable hair for watercolour, gouache, detailed illustrations and demanding fine work. The natural hair is springy: the tip returns to its shape after each stroke, so you can paint lines with control and consistency.

The round shape holds plenty of paint. You can use the belly of the brush for washes and gradients, and the fine tip for details and thin lines, without changing brushes.

Working with the round brush

Wet the brush in clean water before painting and wipe off any excess water. Then pick up the paint with the belly of the brush and wipe it on the edge of the palette so that the tip stays fine. Light pressure gives thin lines, while more pressure gives broader strokes and larger areas. Wet gradients work well because the brush holds plenty of paint and water and releases them evenly.

Caring for natural hair brushes

After painting, rinse the brush thoroughly in clear water so that no paint residue is left at the base of the hairs. Shape the tip with your fingers and leave the brush to dry lying flat. Never stand it in water with the hairs pointing down, as the tip will bend permanently.
