da Vinci Series 708 Scroll Striper – blunt brush for long, even lines
The da Vinci series 708 scroll striper in size 8 (blunt) is a specialist brush for pinstriping, decorative lines and lettering with oil and acrylic paints. The light ox ear hairs are blunt-cut and have a visible length of 55 mm. They hold plenty of paint, so you can draw long lines in one stroke without having to reload in between.
The brush has a short, tapered handle in varnished wood and a seamless artist's ferrule. With the short handle you hold it close to the tip and keep good control of the line. The overall length is approx. 135 mm. For storage, the protective cap supplied protects the hairs.
Drawing a line with the striper
Thin the paint until it flows well and work the brush out on the palette in the direction of travel until the hairs are evenly saturated with paint. Then touch down and pull the brush behind you rather than pushing it. Support your hand as you do so, for example with your little finger resting on the surface or on an edge. This keeps the line steady and even. Paint that is too thick leads to strokes of uneven width, paint that is too thin tends to run.
Choosing and caring for the brush
The blunt striper from series 708 is suited to long, even lines and lettering. If you need fine strokes that taper to a point, a pointed striper is the better choice. Clean the brush straight after painting: wash out acrylic paint with water, and oil paint with the appropriate cleaning agent. Then reshape the hairs and only put the protective cap on once the brush is dry.
