Hahnemühle Sugar Cane Watercolour is a 290 gsm watercolour paper for watercolour, gouache and wet-on-wet techniques. It belongs to the Natural Line and is made from 70% sugar cane fibres (bagasse) and 30% cotton. The paper is a warm natural white, and the cold pressed surface feels velvety.

According to Hahnemühle, the paper absorbs plenty of water and paint without the fibres lifting or the sheet cockling badly. At 290 gsm it has enough body for wet applications, such as soft gradients or glazes in several layers.

Working on the paper

For watercolour and gouache, apply the paint as usual with plenty of water. Wet-on-wet gradients blend softly into one another. According to Hahnemühle, colours on the surface can easily be loosened and glazed again. You can therefore build up layer by layer and lighten areas afterwards. Test new colours and brushes on a corner of the sheet first.

Choosing the right paper

The cold pressed surface has a fine texture and sits between smooth and very rough papers. It is therefore suitable for gradients and for detail. Because the paper is a warm natural white, colours look slightly warmer than on bright white paper. Choose your size from the options.
