Schmincke NEON Soft Pastels – 3 Extra-Soft Fluorescent Colours for Highlights

The Schmincke artists' NEON soft pastel set contains three extra-soft, handmade pastels in bright neon colours: 971 Neon Yellow, 972 Neon Orange and 974 Neon Pink. You can use them to add strong highlights and accents to pastel paintings, mixed-media work and expressive drawings.

According to Schmincke, the soft formula goes on well, blends easily and can be layered. The neon colours can also be mixed with one another, so the three shades give you intermediate tones as well.

Using neon pastels

Neon colours have the strongest effect when used selectively. Start by laying in the main areas and overall mood of your picture with muted pastel colours, then add yellow, orange or pink at the end as highlights, outlines or colour accents. This keeps the brightness intact, so it is not covered by other layers of colour. Because the pastels are extra-soft, a light touch deposits plenty of colour. To blend, use your finger or a blending stump; for fine details, use the edge of the pastel.

Fixing and storing

Pastel only sits loosely on the painting surface. If you want to fix a piece of work, spray it sparingly with a special pastel fixative, as too much fixative can change the appearance of the colours. Test it first on a sample piece. The best way to store the pastels is in the box they come in.
