Gütermann Outdoor 40 – UV and seawater resistant sewing thread for outdoor use

Gütermann Outdoor 40 is a 100% polyester sewing thread for seams that have to withstand sun, weather and abrasion. According to Gütermann, it is particularly UV-resistant, seawater resistant and particularly colourfast, as well as very abrasion-resistant and permanently resistant to environmental influences. The reel holds 400 m, which makes it easier to work out how much you need for longer seams.

The thread comes in 24 colours. Choose your colour from the options. You can use it with a sewing machine or by hand.

Uses for Outdoor 40

This thread is intended for seams that are permanently exposed to sun and moisture. Typical uses include seat pads, cushions and blankets for outdoors, sun and wind protection, and bags and rucksacks. You can also use it for heavily stressed closing seams and topstitching, as both top thread and bobbin thread. The polyester fibre absorbs hardly any water, and the colourfastness means the seam keeps matching the fabric for a long time.

Sewing with Outdoor 40

No. 40 is a strong thread. Use a universal needle in size NM 90–110 and sew a test seam on an offcut of your fabric before starting the project itself. This shows you whether the thread tension and stitch length suit the thickness of the fabric. For several layers of fabric or tightly woven fabrics, choose a needle towards the thicker end of the range. If you sew a seam by hand, pull the thread evenly so that the fabric does not pucker.
