Botz PRO 9302 Achatgrau – grey glaze for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain
Botz PRO 9302 Achatgrau is a liquid glaze in grey for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. It can be used across a very wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C. With a single glaze you can fire in an earthenware firing as well as in a stoneware firing. The bottle contains 800 ml and is suitable for larger quantities or many pieces.
The surface is glossy. How opaque it looks depends on the firing temperature: at low temperatures it is almost opaque, and at high fire it is semi-transparent.
Which firing temperature is right?
Achatgrau changes with the temperature. As the glaze becomes semi-transparent at high fire, the colour of your clay also influences the result. A test piece made from your clay shows you beforehand how the colour turns out for you.
- From 1020 °C (earthenware): The glaze turns coloured and almost opaque. Botz recommends applying 2–3 coats.
- Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): The colour remains, and the surface becomes more semi-transparent. Botz recommends 2 coats.
- High fire up to 1280 °C (stoneware): glassy, semi-transparent surface in intense pastel shades.
- Porcelain: At 1250 °C you achieve good results according to Botz.
Application and avoiding runs
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a brush to clean, bisque-fired ceramics. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Achatgrau tends to run when applied thickly. It is therefore better to apply several thin coats than one thick one. On the lower third of the piece, work particularly thinly and leave the foot unglazed. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. The glaze can also be combined with Botz Unidekor.
Size and colour selection
Achatgrau is also available in 200 ml, which is the smaller quantity for trying it out. Within the PRO series you will also find Transparent (9300), Opalweiß (9301), Citringelb (9303) and Seladongrün (9304), which you process in a similar way in terms of firing range and application.
