Botz Stoneware Engobe 9808 Black – matt, opaque and crisp-edged

Botz stoneware engobe 9808 Black is a liquid black engobe for colouring and decorating stoneware. You apply it to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay for solid areas, patterns and clean outlines. It is opaque, matt and stable in the firing range of 1180 to 1280 °C.

Without a glaze, the engobe looks soft matt and earthy. It belongs to the Botz Edition series and can be mixed with other Edition colours. If you blend black with a lighter engobe such as 9801 White, you get graduated shades of grey. The tub contains 800 ml; the same colour is also available in 200 ml for smaller quantities.

Applying the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use so that the pigments are evenly distributed. Then apply 2 to 3 coats to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay and let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Several thin coats usually cover more cleanly than one thick application, which is more likely to crack as it dries.

Matt or glossy: with and without glaze

Applied neat, the surface stays matt. If you would like a glossy, intense black, cover the engobe with a clear glaze, for example Botz 9300 or 9870. The glaze should suit the firing range of the engobe, i.e. 1180–1280 °C. A test tile on your own clay will show you beforehand how the black looks with and without glaze.

What is it suited to?

Thanks to its good coverage and crisp outlines, the engobe suits graphic patterns, lettering and bold areas of colour on stoneware.
