Round basket base Ø 300 mm – the starting point for hand-woven baskets
This round basket base in birch plywood is the foundation for a woven basket. It has a diameter of 300 mm, is approx. 3 mm thick and has 45 holes, each approx. 3.3 mm in diameter. You push the stakes, the upright rods along which you later weave the sides, into these holes.
As the holes are already drilled, there is nothing to mark out or drill, and you can start weaving straight away. This saves work and is especially helpful when you are new to basket weaving.
Starting the basket
Push the stakes into the holes so that they do not slip through but are not too loose either. They must not be thicker than the holes. A drop of wood glue holds them firmly in place. Then bend all the stakes upwards and weave the sides in rounds around them.
A tip on the number of holes
The base has 45 holes, an odd number. This suits simple over-and-under weaving: an odd number of stakes means the pattern is offset on every round. If you use all the holes, the pattern stays regular without an extra stake.
