Efco Tjanting (Batik Wax Pen) – for Fine Wax Lines on Fabric
The Efco tjanting, also known as a batik wax pen, applies liquid wax to fabric with precision. In batik, the waxed areas stay light when the fabric is dyed afterwards, creating lines, ornaments and motifs that contrast with the dyed background. The tjanting has a brass head and a wooden handle. Choose the spout diameter from the options.
The technique originally comes from Indonesia. You guide the wax across the fabric like a pen. It suits beginners as well as anyone who wants to put traditional patterns or their own designs onto cotton, linen and other natural fabrics.
Working with the tjanting
Wash the fabric beforehand so that no finish interferes with the wax or the dye, and stretch it flat. Melt the batik wax in a wax melter and dip the tjanting in until the head has filled with wax. Wipe the spout briefly on the edge of the container so that nothing drips. Then draw the lines calmly and evenly. If the wax is too cool, it sits on top of the fabric and the spout clogs. If it does not penetrate the fabric, the motif will not stay cleanly light during dyeing. After dyeing, remove the wax, for example by ironing between absorbent paper.
Which spout to choose
The smaller the spout diameter, the finer the wax line. Draw fine patterns and details with a narrow spout; for bolder lines or larger areas, use a wider one. Choose the diameter from the options to suit your motif.
