Botz 9048 Engobe Schwarz – matt, opaque engobe for sgraffito and feathering

Botz liquid glaze 9048 Engobe Schwarz is a matt, opaque black engobe for ceramics. You apply it to leather-hard to dry greenware or to bisque-fired clay and use it for sgraffito, marbling and feathering patterns. It is stable in a firing range of 900–1100 °C.

The colour depends on the firing temperature: from approx. 1020 °C the black becomes deep, while around 900 °C it looks more grey. A test tile shows you beforehand how the result will look in your kiln. Unglazed, the surface stays an earthy matt. For stronger colour, apply a thin coat of Botz 9106 Transparent glänzend over the top; a single firing is possible.

Application and techniques

Apply the engobe in 2–3 coats with a brush or slip trailer and let each coat dry slightly. The black surface is particularly suited to techniques where contrast matters. The Botz range includes other engobe colours, such as white and grey, which you can combine with it.

• Sgraffito: apply the engobe to the leather-hard clay and scratch the motif through the layer so that the clay underneath shows
• Marbling and feathering: apply the slightly thinned engobe to dampened clay
• Mixing: with Botz 9450 in a ratio of 30 % engobe to 70 % glaze

Firing and use as casting slip

The engobe stays stable in the firing range of 900–1100 °C. For a rich black, fire towards the upper end, from approx. 1020 °C; at around 900 °C you get a lighter, greyer result. On small objects you can also use the engobe as a casting slip. Fired at approx. 1050 °C, it vitrifies and becomes frost-proof.
