Botz Unidekor 4005 Chromgrün – liquid decorating colour for underglaze and porcelain
Botz Unidekor 4005 Chromgrün is a liquid universal decorating colour in an opaque, glossy green. You can use it for underglaze work, porcelain painting, majolica and relief techniques. The firing range is 1000 to 1250 °C. According to Botz, the colour is exempt from hazard labelling: it is lead-free and contains no hazardous substances in concentrations requiring labelling.
Worth knowing with this colour: Chromgrün loses colour from 1100 °C. If you fire stoneware at a high temperature, the green turns paler than the other Unidekor shades. For a strong green, fire to about 1100 °C.
Application and techniques
Unidekor is liquid and can be applied directly with a brush. You can paint on bisque-fired ceramic and then apply a thin coat of clear glaze over the top. The colour is equally suitable for porcelain painting, majolica and relief work. For the in-glaze technique, you apply it to dry glaze. Botz names specific glazes for this, for example 9108, 9106 and 9107, but not 9102. Before firing, the colours look matt and less vivid; they only show their full intensity after firing.
- Undiluted, you can also apply the colour with an airbrush.
- The Unidekor colours can be mixed with one another, so you can create your own shades.
- Mixing with 4009 Weiß produces light pastel shades.
Firing and colour effect
The firing range is 1000–1250 °C. With Chromgrün, the colour fades from 1100 °C, and on stoneware above 1220 °C it is not as intense as many other Unidekor shades. For a rich green, plan a firing in the lower part of the range. A test piece on your own clay body shows you beforehand how the green turns out at your temperature.
