Botz Unidekor 4003 Weinrot – liquid decorating colour for underglaze, onglaze and porcelain
Botz Unidekor 4003 Weinrot is a liquid universal decorating colour for ceramics and porcelain. You can use it for underglaze work, as an onglaze colour, for porcelain painting, for majolica technique and for relief technique. The firing range is 1000–1250 °C, so it suits many firing programmes.
According to Botz, all Unidekor colours can be mixed with one another. Mixed with Unidekor 4009 Weiß, Weinrot gives pastel shades, and with other Unidekor colours you can create your own shades. Undiluted, the colour is also suitable for an airbrush. According to Botz, the colour is exempt from hazard labelling, meaning it is lead-free and contains no hazardous substances in concentrations requiring labelling. It is made in Germany.
Working with Unidekor
For underglaze work, paint onto bisque-fired ceramics, cover the colour with a thin coat of clear glaze and then fire at, for example, 1050 °C. When applied to a dry glaze (inglaze technique), the colour looks matt and less vivid before firing; its full intensity only shows after firing. It is therefore best to test the shade on a test tile or test piece before painting a whole piece. For fine colour gradients or even surfaces, apply Unidekor undiluted with an airbrush.
Firing and colour behaviour of 4003 Weinrot
Weinrot behaves differently from most Unidekor colours: from 1100 °C, 4003 loses colour. If you are planning a piece in this red, choose a firing temperature towards the lower end of the 1000–1250 °C firing range. With Weinrot, firing higher on stoneware does not give more depth of colour, even though many other Unidekor colours become more intense there.
