Botz UNIDEKOR 4008 Neutralgrau – opaque decorating colour for underglaze, porcelain and majolica

Botz UNIDEKOR 4008 Neutralgrau is a liquid universal decorating colour in an opaque, glossy grey. You can use it for underglaze and overglaze techniques, porcelain painting, majolica and relief work. The pot contains 30 ml. The firing range of 1000–1250 °C covers many firing profiles, so you can use one colour for different techniques.

According to Botz, Unidekor is exempt from hazard labelling: lead-free and free of hazardous substances in concentrations requiring labelling. All 24 Unidekor colours can be mixed with one another. Adding 4009 Weiß lightens the grey to pastel shades. Undiluted, the colour is also suitable for airbrush. It is made in Germany.

Using Unidekor

Apply the colour with a brush. Once dry, you can also coat it with a clear glaze using a soft brush. The right firing profile depends on the technique and the clay body:

• Underglaze: paint on bisque-fired ceramic, apply a thin coat of clear glaze over the top and fire at 1050 °C.
• Porcelain: do not apply the colour too thinly and fire at 1200 °C or above, or glaze with a clear glaze and fire at approx. 1080 °C.
• Stoneware: above 1220 °C, Unidekor becomes very intense.
• In-glaze: apply the colour onto dry glaze. Before firing it looks matt and less vivid; its full intensity only shows after firing.

Mixing and lightening Neutralgrau

4008 gives you a ready-made grey for lettering, outlines and filled areas. If you add 4009 Weiß, you get pastel shades and can lighten the colour as needed. Measure out the mixture in small amounts first and note down the ratio so that you can repeat it later. The colour effect and intensity depend on the clay, the thickness of application and the firing temperature; a test piece shows you the result beforehand.
