Wooden sock gauge – check foot length and shoe size as you knit
The wooden sock gauge is a sock ruler for measuring while you knit socks. It has two scales, one for 4-ply and one for 6-ply sock yarn, and shows foot length and the matching shoe size. This way you can check as you go whether your sock will come out the right size, rather than having to finish knitting and then try it on.
The gauge is compact and light. You can slip it into your knitting bag and take it with you. Wood does not build up static the way some plastics do.
Using the sock gauge while knitting
Lay the sock you have started against the gauge and read off the scale how long the foot is so far and which shoe size that corresponds to. Compare the figure with the length you need, and allow for the length of the toe in your pattern. It is best to measure the sock slightly relaxed, without stretching it, otherwise it will turn out too long.
4-ply or 6-ply: which scale suits your yarn?
The double scale covers finer sock yarn (4-ply) and thicker sock yarn (6-ply). Use the scale that matches your yarn. This means you do not have to settle on one yarn weight and can use the gauge for different sock projects.
