Botz 9040 Engobe Set – 6 Colours to Try, with Applicator Tips

The Botz 9040 engobe set is a starter set for trying out engobes. It contains 6 engobes of 50 ml each, 300 ml in total, plus 3 applicator tips and an adapter. The colours are White (9041), Ochre Yellow (9043), Medium Blue (9046), Dark Green (9051), Dark Red (9061) and Black (9048). The engobes are plain-coloured and matt, and are designed for a firing range of 900–1100 °C.

The tips fit onto the adapter, which is screwed onto the bottles. This lets you apply lines, dots and fine patterns straight from the bottle, without a brush. The set is a good choice if you want to test engobes before buying larger quantities.

Working with the set

Stir the engobe well before use or shake the bottle vigorously. Then screw on the adapter and tip and apply the engobe to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay. The inner lid stays in the bottle, and the tip is pushed onto the adapter. Afterwards, bisque-fire the piece if necessary, or glaze it once it has dried, to achieve the final intensity of colour. Firing is at approx. 1050 °C.

Tips, bottles and refilling

The three tips have different diameters: 1.2 mm for fine lines and details, 1.5 mm for medium strokes and 1.8 mm for bolder lines and larger dots. The tips can be cleaned under running water. It is best to clean them straight after working, so that no engobe dries in the tip. Once the bottles are empty, you can refill them with Botz engobes from the 200 ml or 800 ml containers.
