Botz UNIDEKOR 4015 Farngrün – opaque ceramic colour for underglaze and overglaze
Botz UNIDEKOR 4015 Farngrün is a liquid universal ceramic colour in a glossy, opaque green. You can use it for underglaze work, porcelain painting, majolica technique and relief technique. According to Botz, it is also suitable as an overglaze or in-glaze colour. The firing range is 1000–1250 °C.
Before firing, the colour looks matt and less intense; its full strength only shows after firing. Farngrün is one of the Unidekor colours that lose intensity from 1100 °C. For a strong green, it is therefore best to fire in the lower to middle part of the range. At stoneware temperatures the green becomes paler. A test piece will show you beforehand how the colour looks in your kiln.
Working with Unidekor
The colour can be used in different ways depending on the technique. The techniques differ mainly in where the colour sits in the build-up.
- Underglaze technique: apply the colour, then cover it with a thin coat of glaze; Botz recommends glaze 9106 for this.
- In-glaze technique "glaze+paint": paint onto the dry, unfired glaze. Matt Botz glazes such as 9108, 9107, 9487–9491 and 9612 are suitable; according to the Botz data sheet, 9102 is not. Fire according to the firing range of the base glaze.
- Airbrush: the colour is suitable for this undiluted.
- Marbling: slightly diluted, you can marble on damp or fired clay or on bisque ware.
Mixing and varying the shade
The Unidekor colours can be mixed with each other, so you can create your own shades of green. Mixing with 4009 Weiß gives pastel shades. Bear in mind that the colour only shows its final effect after firing. Mix a small amount first and fire it as a test.
